Liu Xinyi lives and works in Beijing and Hangzhou. Liu received his Bachelor of Arts from Sculpture Department, China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, and his Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London. His practise starts from analysing widely accepted social and political norms and common knowledges; the practise then develops and expands in the process of tracing relevant cultural experiences circulated in the public realms. He frequently deals with small units of research project; regarding political awareness and the underlying signifying system that are constantly being shaped, he carries out conceptual identifications and individualised arrangements, by making objects, sculptures, videos and site-specific installations and other mediums. Liu’s recent work focuses on visiting social spaces in reality and the social bodies within; he also started examining the infrastructural technologies that have been shaping modernities in China, furthering the understanding and imagination of cultural subjects as such in a situated artistic practise.
