Artist Statement
BRC Studio

The conservatory on the rooftop of the BRC Studio offers ample room for imagination. At first glance, it seemed almost purpose-built to declare its ability to surveil the movements unfolding around it. Coincidentally, in the post-pandemic period, I had been seeking an opportunity to better understand the professions whose importance surged under conditions of social emergency—such as volunteers and private security firms temporarily assigned community-management duties through forms of “outsourced policing.” Thus, imagining how one might install a superfluous security post suspended in the semi-air of Luogezhuang Village became the starting point of my so-called “brain fog.”
This line of thought prompted the participating artists to share with me stories of the security checkpoints they had witnessed or heard about in the vicinity of the village over the past couple of years. Beyond recounting these experiences, they also accompanied me into the nearby ruins to search for related discarded materials, allowing me to trace the lingering silhouette of an epidemic-era vigilance—or, perhaps, a kind of social persona that can be summoned and dismissed at will.
